'King of Alengka, ' mask

The menacing fangs of Rahwana command attention in this mask by Nyoman Subrata. According to the great Hindu Ramayana epic, Rahwana is the gigantic ogre-king of Alengka, mythically situated on the island of Sri Lanka. He kidnaps Sita, the wife of the heroic Rama, only to eventually be killed by Rama and the white monkey army, commanded by Hanoman, the revered white monkey general. Using suar wood as his medium, Subrata passionately conveys a piece of Bali�s rich Hindu heritage.
